Dragons and meep

July 2nd, 2007

You may have noticed that some of your dragon friends may “meep!” at you. The first time this happens you may feel confused. What is meep supposed to mean anyways? Despite it’s increasing popularity few people know the true meaning of the word meep, and others are simply misinformed. This is unfortunate, and is the source of many a dragon’s unhappiness. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Nobody knows more about meep nor has used it more often than I have. In fact I dare say that I am primarily responsible for making the word popular. Many of my friends saw me meeping, and thought it was cool. As the trend spread to the masses it’s origin was quickly lost. This is why I’ve decided that it is time to set the record straight.

Many people on wikipedia or urban dictionary will tell you that meep is a surprised sound. This is only partially true, and ignores the word’s true origin. Dragons meep as a primary means to attract attention. A dragon will meep when it is surprised so that others nearby will be alerted to the situation. Dragon hatchings are notorious for meeping incessantly particularly when they are hungry. Some dragons meep a lot because they are bored or feel ignored. Others such as myself are simply attention whores.

Whatever the reason is that a dragon is meeping at you, it is important that you do not ignore this communication especially if your dragon meeps a lot. Consider the following communication:

<twd> meep
* Agent_5 pats the whiny dragon on the head

What a sad situation. This dragon is meeping in a desperate cry for attention, and he is being completely ignored. Such responses to a dragon’s attention getting attempts could lead a dragon to become despondent. A better response would have been pounce! This way the dragon feels he is getting the attention he deserves. The pounce will usually be followed by another meep. The end result is that both of you are happy. Let’s see this in action:

<TWD> meep
* hyrulian pounces TWD
* TWD meeps

I hope that this article helps clear up some of the questions and confusion you may have had surrounding meep. Please direct your friends to this article so that they may also learn about this important topic. Also if your having trouble keeping your dragon friend happy please feel free to contact me. I will try my best address any questions in future articles.

    I’ve seen this term used in the furry fandom, almost exclusively by foxes, for quite some time. Generally it is a call of surprise, indeed. I don’t think co-opting is bad though.
